Key Findings
Highest Rated Genres
Documentary, animation, and adventure films consistently receive the highest average ratings across all time periods. These genres maintain strong audience appreciation regardless of changing trends.
Most Polarizing Genres
Horror and thriller genres show the highest rating variance, indicating more polarized audience reactions. These genres tend to have strong niche appeal rather than broad audience satisfaction.
Rating Trends Over Time
Science fiction and superhero films have seen significant increases in average ratings since 2010, reflecting improved production quality and mainstream acceptance of these genres.
Genre Combinations
Films categorized in multiple genres (e.g., drama-comedy, action-adventure) typically receive higher ratings than single-genre films, suggesting that genre-blending appeals to wider audiences.
Methodology Notes
This visualization uses bar charts and box plots to represent rating distributions across genres. Average ratings are calculated using a weighted mean that accounts for the number of votes each film received.
Genre classifications are based on primary and secondary genre tags in the TMDB dataset. Films with multiple genres are counted in each applicable category for the distribution analysis.
